Tradeoff-induced Decision Anxiety: Unintended Negative Effects on Preferences for Decision Aids

چکیده
As computer-based decision aids become more widely available – both online and on the office desktop, better insights are needed into how their design features influence people’s willingness to use them. This research hypothesizes and shows that the extent to which decision aids require decision makers to explicitly confront difficult tradeoffs increases their decision anxiety, undermining their preferences for using the decision aid. In a counterbalanced withinsubjects experiment (N=153), participants used two decision aids, one of which required the user to make explicit tradeoff judgments to a greater degree than the other. Validated multi-item scales were used to measure decision anxiety, perceived effort, perceived accuracy, and preference for the decision aid. We found that decision anxiety mediated between the decision aid (high tradeoff difficulty versus low tradeoff difficulty) and preferences. Further, perceived effort and perceived accuracy mediated between decision anxiety and preferences. These findings suggest that negative affect induced by tradeoff difficulty is an antecedent to cognitive appraisals of computerized decision aids. Thus the present research extends prior cognitive conceptualizations of decision aid preference by incorporating affective impacts of design features.

Helping pregnant women make better decisions: a systematic review of the benefits of patient decision aids in obstetrics
Objectives Patient decision aids can be used to support pregnant women engaging in shared decisions, but little is known about their effects in obstetrics. The authors aimed to evaluate the effects of patient decision aids designed for pregnant women on clinical and psychosocial outcomes. Design Systematic review. Data on all outcomes were extracted and summarised. All studies were critically ...
متن کاملExperimental Testing of Intrinsic Preferences for NonInstrumental Information
The classical model of decision making under uncertainty assumes that decision makers care only about final outcomes. The decision mak ers’ beliefs enter the model only as a means of weighting the possible material outcomes, yet they do not generate an intrinsic value by themselves. Put differently, they are not part of the domain over which preferences are defined. Consequently, psychological...
متن کاملInterval-Valued Hesitant Fuzzy Method based on Group Decision Analysis for Estimating Weights of Decision Makers
In this paper, a new soft computing group decision method based on the concept of compromise ratio is introduced for determining decision makers (DMs)' weights through the group decision process under uncertainty. In this method, preferences and judgments of the DMs or experts are expressed by linguistic terms for rating the industrial alternatives among selected criteria as well as the relativ...
متن کاملHealth decision aids to facilitate shared decision making in office practice.
For medical decisions with more than one reasonable option, patient participation in decision making is often necessary to optimally match management decisions with patient preferences. Health decision aids are designed to facilitate shared decision making by helping patients and their physicians choose among reasonable clinical options. Although these aids vary in content, common denominators ...
